What personally-identifiable information is collected?
McKinsey collects personally-identifiable information on certain areas of the Site when users register, access or use McKinsey Academy or McKinsey Academy Content, including use of course content, submission of User Content and participation in user posting areas (such as bulletin boards, discussion forums and surveys). The personally-identifiable information collected may consist of information that you provide, such as your name, e-mail address, and other User Account Information. In addition, McKinsey Academy may (a) receive personally-identifiable information about you directly from your Sponsoring Organization; (b) collect and/or create personally-identifiable information related to your use of and performance in McKinsey Academy, including Participation Data (as such term is defined below); and (c) collect certain other information you do not visibly enter or intentionally provide that is not necessarily personally identifying, but could become identified with you, such as your IP address, browsing, viewing or other usage data in connection with your use of McKinsey Academy and the Site, click stream data, HTTP protocol elements, and the status of cookies placed on your computer by McKinsey or by our third party licensors or content providers.
How may McKinsey use my personally-identifiable information?
We use your personally-identifiable information to provide you with the McKinsey Academy services you request, including enabling you to access courses and McKinsey Academy Content through the Site, and to contact you either directly or through the Site about McKinsey Academy in order to provide support, important information or otherwise to help improve your user experience.
Your personally-identifiable information may also be used, both by us and by our authorized third party service providers (including edX), to collect, discover, and prepare aggregate statistical and volume information and analyses, and other similar data, including with respect to the number, characteristics, behavior, and performance of McKinsey Academy, users of and visitors to the Site, and users of McKinsey Academy Content (collectively, “Aggregate Site Information”). We may use, and permit our authorized third party service providers to use, this Aggregate Site Information in order to administer the Site, for research purposes and to further develop, improve and promote McKinsey Academy and the Site, or for any other purpose provided that such use would not be reasonably likely to result in your identification and is not prohibited by applicable law. We and/or our authorized third party service providers may use persistent cookies to help us collect and use such Aggregate Site Information, as well as to help us improve the visitor and user experience, manage McKinsey Academy and McKinsey Academy Content, and track visitor and user behavior. We may retain all Aggregate Site Information, even if derived or developed from your User Account Information or User Content, indefinitely.
What information does McKinsey Academy share with my Sponsoring Organization?
If you are participating in McKinsey Academy with the facilitation of a Sponsoring Organization (as such term is defined in the Terms), at the request of your Sponsoring Organization we may provide your Sponsoring Organization information about your activities and performance in connection with McKinsey Academy, which may include grades, evaluation, performance, critiques and other progress and engagement data and metrics with respect to particular McKinsey Academy courses or services (collectively, “Participation Data”). McKinsey shall not be responsible or liable for the use of such information by your Sponsoring Organization, and such use shall be subject to your Sponsoring Organization’s policies (including privacy policies) applicable to you.
How are cookies used?
Cookies are small packets of information that are stored by your web browser. They are put on your web browser by the websites that you visit. These packets of information do not contain personal information about you but they do allow us to know if you visit the same website twice or if you visit related websites.
The laws in certain countries, including in the European Union, require you to provide a form of consent before cookies are placed on your web browser unless the cookie is necessary for the website to work.
There is no agreed standard for how companies comply with these laws. We do the following:
- We respect your wishes, and you can inspect, delete, or block any cookies used by us by selecting the appropriate control in your web browser.
- We support technologies that have been developed and are being developed for your web browser that allows you to be more selective about the cookies that your web browser will accept.
What are “cookies” used for on this Site?
We may also contract with a third party to send e-mail or other types of communications to Users. Is personally-identifiable information disclosed to third parties?
We shall not intentionally disclose or transfer (and shall take reasonable steps to prevent the unauthorized or accidental disclosure of) your personally-identifiable information to third parties (i.e., persons that are not employees or contractors of McKinsey & Company, Inc. or its affiliates) without your consent, whether for such third parties’ marketing purposes or otherwise, except as follows:
- We may also be compelled to surrender personal user or customer information, including personally-identifiable information, to legal authorities (including to law enforcement and/or national security authorities) without express user consent if presented with a court subpoena or similar legal order, or as required or permitted by the laws, rules, and regulations of any applicable jurisdiction.
- Also, in the event of a violation of the Terms or any other terms on this Site or to which you agree in connection with your use of McKinsey Academy, including but not limited to a violation of any restrictions on use of McKinsey Academy Content or your provision of User Content, McKinsey may disclose personal user or customer information, including personally-identifiable information, to affected parties and legal authorities in furtherance of potential or on-going legal proceedings.
You should be aware that whenever you publicly disclose information online, even to a limited group of recipients (for example, other users who are enrolled in the same McKinsey Academy course as you) that information could be collected and used by others. McKinsey is not responsible for any action or policies of any third parties, including other McKinsey Academy users, who collect information that users disclose to such third parties in connection with their use of McKinsey Academy or the Site.

Transborder hosting and transfer of information
Personally-identifiable information collected on the Site or otherwise through McKinsey Academy may be transferred to and processed by from time to time to McKinsey offices or personnel, or to third parties including authorized third party service providers, located throughout the world, and the Site may be viewed and hosted by McKinsey or its service providers anywhere in the world, including countries that may not have the same data protection laws as are found in your country of residence. By using McKinsey Academy or the Site and providing us with your information, you voluntarily consent to such transborder transfer, processing and hosting of such information.

Access and Opt-Out
If you consent to our collection, use, and disclosure of your personally-identifiable information, including User Account Information and Participation Data, you may request that we provide you with the personally-identifiable information that McKinsey has about you to ensure that it is accurate or for other reasons allowed under applicable law. McKinsey will provide you with access to your personally-identifiable information in our possession to the extent required by applicable law. Please note there may be times when we might be unable to do so, such as when (a) disclosing your information may reveal confidential information or personally-identifiable information about someone else, if we are unable to separate it; (b) your personally-identifiable information has been de-identified, anonymized and/or aggregated in such a way that we are unable to identify it as yours without undue burden or expense; or (c) providing access is prohibitively costly.
You may revoke your consent to the collection, use and/or disclosure of your personally-identifiable information at any time by contacting McKinsey at the address listed below. Please note that if you revoke your consent certain features of McKinsey Academy and/or the Site, including courses in which you are currently enrolled, may no longer be able to be made available to you as they rely on the collection, use and/or disclosure of your personally-identifiable information. You may also ask us to remove or delete your personally-identifiable information in our possession, and where required by applicable law we will do so promptly and to the extent we are technically able. Please note there may be times when we might be unable to do so, such as when your personally-identifiable information has been de-identified, anonymized and/or aggregated in such a way that we are unable to identify it as yours without undue burden or expense (including, by way of example, where your personally-identifiable information has been incorporated into or used to help create Aggregate Site Information) or where we are required by applicable law to retain your personal-identifiable information.
We understand the importance of protecting children's privacy, especially in an on-line environment. Neither McKinsey Academy nor the Site is designed for or directed at children 13 years of age or younger, and we will not intentionally collect or maintain information about anyone under this age.
